Eagles Golf Team Ends Best Season in Years

Mon, Oct 8, 2012

(Metro Vancouver) - The weather was on the side of the golfers this past season with every tournament showing sunshine. And the sun continued to shine for this 4thand final Tournament of the 2012-2013 PACWEST season at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club hosted by University of the Fraser Valley (UFV).

The first day of competition showed some promise as Caroline Gleerup (Sweden/Richmond) was first to tee off in the Ladies’ Division and was the first to turn in her scorecard. Shooting her best tournament round this season, Gleerup handed in a respectable Day 1 score of 90. The Eagles’ men followed consecutively, one by one, with the best scores provided by Jason Thompson (Langley) with a score of 73, Aaron Ferrer (Delta) shooting 77 despite triple-bogeying the tough 18th hole, Paul Rempel (Smithers) with another 77 score, and Grant Steinberg (Surrey) rounding out the Day 1 Eagles’ scores with a 78.

The final round on Sunday provided some memorable highlights with Mark Gamache (Surrey) firing an impressive 78 in only his second event of the year to end the tournament with a cumulative score of 162. Gleerup parred the 18th hole to better her Day 1 score with an 89 to end her season in the last tournament with a 179 and 7th place; a personal best and only a stone’s throw away from achieving 4th.

In the men’s team division, Thompson fired a terrific 72 on Day 2, just narrowly missing a 4-footer at the 18th for an even par at 71. Thomas Rose (Surrey) redeemed himself in the 2nd round and shot a solid 73 (+2) followed by his good friend and teammate, Rempel, who scrambled to shoot a 78. The rest of the Eagles golfers were unable to break 80 but still worked hard for respectable outcomes.

Thompson (73-72) finished tied for 6th in the tournament and placed 12th individually overall for the season. A tremendous opening season for Thompson, he was well within reach of at least a top-three placing at all tournaments. Rose (80-73) tied for 19th place in Chilliwack and ended in 15th place overall for the season. First-year Eagle, Ferrer (77-80), finished the season standings placing tied for 18th while third-year Rempel (77-78) finished in a solitary 26th place.

The Eagles Golf Team finished 5th in the final tournament of the PACWEST season. Cumulatively, the Eagles Team finished 5th overall in the conference standings achieving consistent lower 600 scores in all four tournaments. This is the best placing the team has seen since the 2007-2008 season.
