Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) Miss Representation Action Group is proud to present its February 16, 2013, screening of Payback, with special guest Margaret Atwood. Atwood, author of Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth, on which the film is based, will take part in the town hall discussion following the screening.
A winner of many international literary awards, including the prestigious Booker Prize, Atwood, Canadian author and cultural critic, is a giant of modern literature. She has anticipated, satirized, and even changed the popular pre-conceptions of our time and is the rare writer whose work is adored by the public, acclaimed by the critics, and read on university campuses. On stage, Atwood is both serious-minded and wickedly funny. She is the author of more than thirty volumes of poetry, children's literature, fiction, and non-fiction.
The Miss Representation Action Group will be hosting this event at the Melville Centre for Dialogue at the Richmond Campus from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (registration at 3:30 p.m.).
Hosting the event will be CBC Radio broadcaster, Sheryl MacKay, familiar to West Coast listeners as host of the program North by Northwest. Keynote speaker will be Dr. William Rees, UBC professor emeritus, former director of UBC’s School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), and originator of the “ecological footprint” analytic tool.
The Miss Representation Action Group welcomes all community members to this rare opportunity to come face-to-face with one of Canada’s great minds and cultural icons and, as part of a small audience, consider some of her ideas as reflected Paybackand engage with the person herself.

The Miss Representation Action Group is a Kwantlen-based group of inspired, passionate faculty, staff, students, and community members who came together in response to Kwantlen's Miss Representation documentary screening and town hall event in January 2012. The Miss Representation Action Group's mission is to continue the dialogues started at that event, and, as MissRepresentation.org asks, "unit[e] individuals around a common, meaningful goal to spark millions of small actions that ultimately lead to a cross-generational movement to eradicate gender stereotypes and create lasting cultural and sociological change."
The Action Group has decided that media misrepresentation of truths, rather than a strict focus on feminist and gender issues, will be the unifying theme of the inaugural 2012-2013 documentary series. The documentary series is aimed at fostering an interdisciplinary culture of faculty, staff, student, and public engagement through the viewing and discussion of documentary film; at the same time, it is aimed at helping to sustain what is already an established community of learning and practice at Kwantlen.
