Metro Vancouver, B.C. – Braeden Saucy may soon be coming to a theatre near you.
The recent Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) graduate is one of eight finalists vying to be one of the stars of the pre-show entertainment in Cineplex theatres across the country.
His one-minute video audition for the entertainment company’s Pre-Show Casting Call contest is the only submission from B.C. to make the final round. Now, it's up to voters to determine which three contestants will win the chance to film up to 12 segments as Cineplex pre-show hosts. The winners will also get enough SCENE reward points to see a movie a week for a year.
"I've always been a huge film buff and a storyteller, but acting and directing are pretty difficult industries to make a career of. So about three years ago I started making short comedic videos and posting them on YouTube just for fun,” said Saucy, a Delta resident who graduated from KPU in December with a bachelor of arts in general studies.
“When I saw that the audition for this contest was a one-minute video submission, I knew I had the basic skills to throw something together. So I said ‘Why not?’, rallied some friends and submitted an audition. I was thrilled when I found out I had made the top eight from across Canada.”
Voting closes this Friday, and so far, Saucy has over 3,000 votes in his favour.
“This experience so far has taught me the value of putting your creativity out there for the world to see. As artists we often fear the rejection and ridicule of our work, but I’ve had an overwhelming amount of support from family, friends and the community – including retweets from the mayor of Delta and the mayor of Vancouver.”
Saucy currently works as a teacher’s assistant at the Delta Film Academy. He plans to pursue a career in high school education and says he would love to eventually teach classes in film, creative writing, leadership and social justice. In January, he expects to return to KPU to study French.
