Metro Vancouver.....The 2015 Active KSA/KPU Rec Indoor Soccer Tournament Champions were crowned on Friday, February 13th as FC Barcelona took top nods at the Eagles' Nest on the KPU Surrey campus.
The tournament was off to a great start as ten teams registered in advance of the February 5th sign-up deadline. Teams of four plus goalie faced off for seven minutes in four-game round robin style of play. All teams were extremely enthusiastic and competitive, the matches coming down to close scores and intense rivalries built.
The battle for hardware came down to Legends versus Breaking Balls for the bronze and FC Barcelona versus Alhilal for the gold. A tenacious and hard-fought match for bronze saw Breaking Balls win 1-0, while the championship match was scoreless in regulation time. The teams went to a shoot-out where FC Barcelona emerged victorious 1-0. Check out the tournament highlight reel, courtesy of Active KSA.

FC Barcelona team members each took home the coveted golden KPU Rec Champion t-shirts, gold medals, water bottles, and $25.00 gift cards to KSA Grassroots Cafe and Tim Hortons. Also winners in the 2015 Tournament were the 'Keep Up Juggling' champion Swags (Chelsey) Lal with 200 juggles and 'Fastest Kick' champion Nawaf Binsaleh with a kick of 167km/hr. Lal and Binsaleh each walked away with a KPU Rec t-shirt and $25.00 gift card to either Subway or Sport Chek.

Next tournament on the schedule for Active KSA and KPU Rec is March Madness 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 20th. Registration is open online or at the KPU Fitness Desk on the Surrey Campus, deadline to register is Friday, March 13th.

The KPU Eagles Department of Athletics & Recreation enters its 14th season of interuniversity competition. The Eagles are members of the PACWEST conference and play in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with 100 student-athletes participating on eight varsity teams in men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, badminton and golf. KPU athletics plays its home games at the Eagles’ Nest (Surrey Campus), Northview Golf & Country Club, Newton Athletic Park, all located in Surrey, BC and the Ace Badminton Centre in Richmond, BC. The Eagles are active in the conference with staff members on various advisory committees and competing to host both provincial and national championships. The student-athletes are mainly from the lower mainland but KPU’s rosters have included student-athletes from North America, South America, Asia and Europe.
