Meet the Maestro Bramwell Tovey at KPU’s next TALK

Thu, Dec 22, 2016

Surrey, B.C. – Curious to meet the maestro? Get your chance at KPU’s next TALK.

Grammy and Juno award-winning musician, conductor and composer, Bramwell Tovey, is coming to Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) to talk and share music on Jan. 31. This special event is part of the Third Age of Learning Kwantlen (TALK), which provides those 50 years of age and over with creative and stimulating educational activities.

As music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) and artistic adviser of the VSO School of Music, Tovey will lead the audience through a typical day at the VSO while revealing some of the secrets behind the music performed.

“I’m delighted to be back at KPU taking part in an educational series devoted to life-long learning,” said Tovey. “Music teaches us to think bigger and to realize the possibilities within ourselves much like most educational pursuits. I cannot wait to share some inspiring stories, some funny stories, and of course music.”

A renowned composer, Tovey won a 2003 JUNO Award for Requiem for a Charred Skull. Commissions include the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, the Toronto Symphony and Calgary Opera, which premiered his first full length opera The Inventor in 2011. Tovey has also appeared as piano soloist with major orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic.

An Honorary Officer of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music (UK) and the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), Tovey holds honorary degrees from several universities including Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Meet the Maestro takes place Jan. 31, 2017 from noon to 2 p.m. at KPU’s Surrey Campus, Conference Centre, Cedar 1205 A/B (campus map) To register for this event and for a full schedule of TALK events, visit kpu.ca/talk.
