Hundreds of budding designers and aspiring artists will showcase their work at Kwantlen Polytechnic University next week at National Portfolio Day, the only in-person event of its kind in Western Canada.
The day sees experts from leading art and design post-secondary institutions advise high school students and others on developing a portfolio – an admission requirement for many of them. Reviewers provide valuable feedback and guidance on students’ portfolios while offering information on available programs and admission requirements.
“We are excited to be hosting this event for the third time,” says Andhra Goundrey, dean of the Wilson School of Design. “As an accredited member of the National Portfolio Day Association, we are looking forward to welcoming the many future art and design students as they present the best of themselves and learn about the exciting opportunities that await them in post-secondary studies.”
The Wilson School of Design is among the 26 schools participating. Other schools represented at the event include New York School of Interior Design, University of the Arts London, Rhode Island School of Design and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
High school students – particularly those in grades 10 to 12 – parents, teachers, guidance counsellors and college transfer students are encouraged to attend. Students should bring examples of their work and will learn how to improve their portfolios.
“Having the unique opportunity to meet one-on-one with reviewers helps students to present themselves and their talents in the best possible way. Students will not only gain advice on how to improve or present their portfolios, they’ll get an inspiring taste of what it’s like to attend a professional art or design program,” says Goundrey.
National Portfolio Days are annual events typically held in multiple locations across Canada, the United States and Europe. Previous KPU-hosted National Portfolio Day events have attracted over 1,000 students, so attendees are encouraged to choose three to five schools they’d like to connect with and try to meet those first.
“Students should come prepared to meet with like-minded peers, while they wait to visit with attending schools,” says event coordinator Gabrielle Durning. “The event is busy and there are always lineups, but it’s an exciting experience. Wear comfortable clothing, bring snacks, water, patience and a positive attitude.”
National Portfolio Day takes place Saturday, Nov. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at KPU Richmond. Admission is free. Visit KPU’s National Portfolio Day web page for more information and to register.
The Wilson School of Design is also hosting a virtual faculty showcase on Thursday, Nov. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. for those wanting to learn more about what it offers. Visit the showcase web page to register.
