Sustainable Agriculture students from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) are sharing the fruits of their labour with the community this summer.
Students from the Bachelor of Applied Science in Sustainable Agriculture program are selling fruits and vegetables at the weekly Kwantlen Farmers Market.
The market runs from May to November in front of the Richmond Cultural Centre, near the KPU Richmond campus.
“Students set up a market stand with three tents and tables covered in produce, just a bounty of produce we grow here,” says Mike Bomford, instructor in the Sustainable Agriculture Program.
The produce is grown at the KPU Farm on the Garden City Lands. The students harvest the produce each week in preparation for the market each Tuesday.
“We have a pretty good system set up. We pack and harvest on Monday’s or Friday’s, if it’s a long weekend, planning out what we have and how we want to sell it. We have a tight ship,” says KPU student Naomi Waite.
The market runs every Tuesday from 12 to 4 p.m. until the end of November, featuring a changing weekly selection of produce based on the season.
Purchases made at the market support the KPU Farm and contribute to the development of future generations of farmers.
