On October 9, 2024, the KPU Surrey Conference Centre buzzed with energy as students, alumni, and faculty gathered for Co-op Connect 2024, a collaboration between KPU Alumni and the KPU Career Development Centre, proudly sponsored by the KPU Alumni Association (KPUAA). Designed to help Co-op students practice their networking skills, this unique event provided a safe and supportive environment for building meaningful professional connections.
To ensure students felt prepared and confident, a prep session was held before the event. This session led by Co-op instructor, Khairunnisa Ali, emphasized the importance of networking, provided valuable tips, and highlighted the benefits of such opportunities, helping students feel more at ease going into the event.
A Warm Welcome and Exciting Start
The event opened with a heartfelt welcome from Nancy Armitage, Director of Alumni Affairs and Executive Director of KPUAA. Representing KPUAA, the event's sponsor, Henry Flowers, Vice-Chair of KPUAA and a Co-op alumnus, shared his inspiring opening remarks, expressing his excitement for this impactful event. Adding to the event's energy, Manpreet Atwal, a KPU alumna and Marketing Strategist with BC Public Service, served as the Emcee, setting a vibrant tone for the evening.
The event kicked off with a Networking Bingo, an engaging activity designed to help students break the ice. Armed with their bingo cards, students enthusiastically mingled with Co-op alumni and fellow students to complete their cards. This activity not only got conversations flowing but also helped attendees feel comfortable talking to new people.
Interactive Activities and Structured Networking
Following the Networking Bingo, participants engaged in a bridge-building exercise, fostering teamwork and collaboration between students and alumni. This lighthearted activity created a relaxed atmosphere and further encouraged interaction.
The event then transitioned into a structured networking session, where alumni rotated between tables, sharing their Co-op experiences and career journeys with groups of students. These conversations provided invaluable insights, practical advice, and inspiration to students, many of whom expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to connect with alumni who have walked in their shoes.
Celebrating Connections and Success
Co-op Connect 2024 was a resounding success, providing students with an invaluable platform to practice networking in a low-pressure setting. The connections made during the event not only inspired students but also showcased the power of the Co-op program in fostering meaningful professional relationships.
The overwhelmingly positive feedback from students emphasized the value of learning directly from alumni who have navigated the Co-op program and gone on to build successful careers. Events like Co-op Connect are a testament to the supportive and enriching environment that KPU offers to its students.
We look forward to hosting future editions of Co-op Connect to continue empowering students, strengthening alumni connections, and fostering a collaborative Co-op community.
