Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) Fine Arts Department is presenting an art exhibition showcasing work from current students and alumni.
Kapwa Lagi! is an exhibition featuring works by Filipino-Canadian emerging artists from KPU's Bachelor of Fine Arts program.
“Kapwa Lagi” is not only a class project but it has turned into an interpersonal and intrapersonal project for myself and my minority here at KPU,” says student Vin Cuadra, who curated the exhibition.
The title is inspired by the Filipino concept of “Kapwa,” which is a traditional value emphasizing interconnectedness and collective identity, paired with “Lagi,” which means always. The title roughly translates to “Always Connected.”
There are seven art pieces displayed including a charcoal drawing by Thomas Chanyungco, acrylic paintings by Kyle Chua and Jansen Ramos, a ceramic installation by Eloisa Mae Uy, photographic installations by Vin Cuadra and Gracienne Llavore and a video performance by Myrel Ofiana.
“For this exhibition, I wanted to focus on a cultural minority-based project,” says Cuadra. “After hearing about Filipino-related events around the Lower Mainland, I was inspired to curate this event.”
The exhibition is open to the public and runs from Nov. 18 to 29 in the Arbutus Atrium Gallery at KPU Surrey.
