High school students from across Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island came together to compete in the 16th annual Kwantlen Science Challenge at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) Richmond campus.
The day-long event saw 55 teams of students who were split between junior and senior teams compete in five different one-hour challenges.
“They’re competing in challenges like Biology, Jeopardy, Chemistry, Design and Agriculture,” says Dr. Kianoosh Tahani, KPU physics instructor.
The design challenge consisted of teams building boats capable of racing in an artificial pond as well as motorized cars capable of carrying four pop cans across the room.
“You can see the future generation of scientists, the people who are going to build up our own society,” says Tahani. “If they’re passionate about science that means we are building up a society that values science and hence we are heading in the right direction.”
At the end of the competition, Lord Byng Secondary and Prince of Wales Secondary Schools came out on top.
Senior (Grade 11/12):
1. Lord Byng Secondary School
2. Fraser Heights Secondary School
3. Port Moody Secondary School
Junior (Grade 8/9/10):
