KPU PR student Samson Cheng wins prestigious CPRS student award
Metro Vancouver, BC – Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is pleased to announce that Samson Cheng, who graduated from the school’s public relations two-year diploma program last month, was named this year’s winner of the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) Vancouver Student Scholarship. Cheng was announced the winner at CPRS Vancouver’s AGM held last night.
The scholarship of $1000 is awarded each year to a student who submits excellent project work for a real-world client. Cheng submitted a media relations project he developed while interning at Big Mama Student Services, a textbook rental company that helps students manage textbooks in an inexpensive and environmentally efficient manner. The company is to be featured in the July issue of BC Business magazine, due in part to a news release Cheng produced.
“Winning this prestigious student award is a testimonial to Samson’s PR smarts,” says Ange Frymire Fleming, FCPRS APR, Department Chair. “His attention to detail and high-level approach surpasses many entry-level practitioners, which is why he was hired right out of practicum by DDB, a global PR leader.”
Cheng, who credits KPU’s practical and real-world focused PR program for helping him win the scholarship, said this of his win: “It is an incredible title to have as a young professional breaking into the industry. I am honoured to have my work recognized by the CPRS and this award is going to help me in a long way when I look for career opportunities. It’s like a stamp of approval from established professionals.”
Cheng, a Burnaby resident, is the first male student to receive the CPRS scholarship in more than a decade and the 14th KPU winner since 1997.
