Program Highlights and Travel Dates
Travel to Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City in this DESN 3100 Design Field School! Class sessions will be held on campus before and after the travel portion of the course. Over the two-week period students will visit significant cultural locations and design projects. Through these excursions students will gain insights into contextual and cultural history of the regions, as well as personal, community, and global issues related to the built environment and design in general.

Historically significant sites, museums, galleries, top cultural attractions and key sites of interest related to Design such as the Parliament of Canada; the Supreme Court; the National Gallery in Ottawa; the Old Port; the Notre Dame Basilica; Habitat 67; the Botanical Gardens in Montreal; the Quartier Petit Champlain; Fairmont Chateau Frontenac; the Musée de la Civilization, and La Citadelle in Quebec.

Travel during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Currently Canada is still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic where multiple health measures are in place to protect the health and safety of travelers. Most provinces and territories are requiring some form of vaccination passport for travel and entrance into indoor spaces. It is the responsibility of each participant in the field school to read and understand the current policies, requirements, and restrictions for domestic out-of-province travel to Ontario and Quebec. If there are any circumstances or concerns that will affect your participation, please discuss them with the field school faculty leaders.

- Starting Ocober 30, 2021 if you are 12 years of age or older you will need to be fully vaccinated in order to board domestic or international flights departing from airports in Canada as well as VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer trains.

Program Fee
$2,785 CAD (estimated)
Program fee covers: Accommodation, local transportation, tours, city transfers, and museum/gallery/exhibitions.
Additional costs to consider when planning for the field school are: your personal spending budget, flight, transportation costs, most meals and the KPU tuition (3 credits) which are not included in the program fee.

(Applicants are welcome to pay the full amount up-front if it's more convenient, otherwise, the smaller installments are due by the due dates that will be posted above.)
When applying, participants are required to make a non-refundable $500 deposit.
*According to the Field School guidelines, should a participant decide to withdraw from a field school after the deposit deadline, s/he will forfeit the non-refundable deposit and this money will remain in the Field School Fund.
** The fee payment deadlines are set according to the regular university fee schedule in the university calendar.
Payment of academic fees, due dates, withdrawal charges, refund policies, and associated policies for academic fees are set as per the university calendar.
Please note that should a decision be made by KPU to cancel a field school due to low enrolment or other academic/risk issues, participants will be entitled to a full rebate of any payments made including the deposit.

Classes Offered and Pre-requisites
DESN 3100 Design Field School (3 credits)
Classes begin in January and are co-taught by Paola Gavilanez and Lucie Gagné. Exact days/times for the pre-departure classes are TBD. Some of the pre-departure work will be done self-paced over Moodle.
Pre-requisites
60 credits of 1100 level or higher courses, or with permission from field school instructors.
Note that no previous Design experience is needed to enroll in DESN 3100.
