Special Topics in Social and Political Philosophy: The Moral Limits of Liberty
The central question we will be exploring in this cours e is: Under what circumstances is the state morally justified in limiting the liberty of individuals for those individuals' own good? In other words, we will co nsider when, if ever, paternalistic laws and policies are morally justified. Examples of paternalism include laws requiring the use of seatbelts and helmets, an d laws prohibiting recreational drug use, prostitution, and selling one's organs. Our discussion of paternalism will lead us to consider deep and important ques tions about the nature and value of freedom and autonomy, and about the scope and limits of state authority.
Prerequisites:
60 credits fr om courses at the 1100 level or higher, including 6 credits from courses in PHIL.
