NextGen Hops
BC Made, BC Grown
We develop new hop varieties for British Columbia growers that brewers everywhere want to use.
NextGen Hops: The Future of Canadian Hop
NextGen Hops is a Canadian hops breeding program that was established at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) in British Columbia (BC), in partnership with Green Flora Greenhouses and local hops producers. NextGen Hops is a traditional plant breeding program that uses state-of-the-art molecular (DNA analysis), and chemical techniques (HPLC and GCMS), to accelerate the variety development process. BC has a long history of hop cultivation and NextGen Hops utilizes this by crossing locally adapted male hop plants to existing commercial varieties as the foundation of our breeding program.
Moreover, we have transferred heat and drought tolerant traits into our varieties by also using wild hop plants collected from extreme growing environments throughout North America. NextGen Hops is committed to developing unique and improved hops varieties with superior agronomic traits for hops growers, and desirable, novel aromas and flavours for brewers. In short, we develop new hops varieties for British Columbia growers that brewers everywhere want to use!
Research for the hop variety development program takes place at KPU's Applied Genomics Centre in partnership with Green Flora Greenhouses.
What are hops?
Hops are the female flowers of the plant species Humulus lupulus that are used to provide flavour and aromas to beer while also functioning as a natural preservative agent.
Different hop varieties contribute unique flavours and aromas to beer because each hop variety has its own unique chemistry.
The accumulation of flavour and aroma chemistry in hop flowers are influenced by the genetic makeup of the hop variety but also the ‘terroir’ of the local environment and farm practices.
Most hop varieties being grown in BC were bred and trialed in the United States of America or Germany and are not adapted to grow in the BC climate.
