Jane Shin
MEd. (SFU), M.D. (SHSU), CCIPJane is an interdisciplinary faculty instructor and administrator at various postsecondary institutions in Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley. Her personal journey of learning that started as a timid 11-year old immigrant from South Korea without a single vocabulary of English at the time, is as diverse as it is lifelong.
Jane has gone from her teen years as an "ESL (English as Second Language)" student, to studying Genetics & Cell Biology as an undergraduate at University of British Columbia before pursuing her medical doctorate (MD) abroad as an international student in Saint Lucia, United Kingdom, and United States through Spartan Health Sciences University. She also earned her Provincial Instructor Diploma (PID) at Vancouver Community College, then her Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Technology & Learning Design at Simon Fraser University, and most recently became a Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional (CCIP™) through the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion. Currently Jane is at University of Toronto for her doctorate (PhD) in Leadership, Higher & Adult Education with a research interest in universal accessibility.
From wet bench work on a plant phenylpropanoid enzyme in Vancouver and clinical studies on chronic fatigue syndrome in England, to qualitative inquiries in educational technology in Toronto, Jane learned about different ways, systems, and people with which one can situate, pursue, and contribute their learning.
As an instructor Jane journeyed with her students in small and large classes at public and private institutions for over a decade, facilitating one-on-one and group tutorials, labs and field trips both in-person and online using various learning management systems like Moodle, Canvas, D2L, and BlackBoard. Jane's instructional concentration has been in Anatomy & Physiology and Human Biology. She has also led classes in Pathology, Neurology, Kinesiology, Nutrition, and General & Introductory Biology.
"Teaching," or rather, knowledge exchange and discourse, is one of Jane's greatest passions and she considers it a privilege.
