Gonzalo Marquez, lab instructor, KPU Brewing

Gonzalo completed a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering and earned his Master of Business Administration before deciding to pursue his passion for beer and brewing. Gonzalo came to Canada to take the Brewing and Brewery Operations Diploma at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), then worked in the industry after graduating from KPU, and also became a recognized BJCP beer judge.

Brewing beer is Gonzalo's passion, and he loves sharing that with students—whether through new information or personal experience. It motivates him to keep learning and helps inspire the same enthusiasm in students.

The brewing process is constantly improving with new technologies and techniques. Staying up to date as a brewer is a challenge that excites Gonzalo. As a process engineer, he enjoys teaching brewing as a series of logical steps, helping students understand how their decisions impact the final product. This encourages both technical skill and critical thinking.

His advice to students is to be patient. The beer world is constantly evolving, and knowledge is always expanding. A great brewer is shaped by mistakes, experience, and a commitment to continuous learning.

When he’s not teaching in the KPU brewery, you’ll find Gonzalo enjoying a good German Lager and/or running his Spanish podcast, Beercode, about beer.
