Safe Stream Restoration

Students organise stream restoration day

Students from the SAFE group (Students Active For the Environment) organised a stream bank restoration activity on a rainy November saturday. The core of the group SAFE is comprised of EPT students. Working under supervision from Liana Ayach, EPT2002, from the Engineering Department of the City of Surrey, students did some riparian planting along a small creek, a tributary of the Patullo system. The site, named Trouton Pit after an old gravel pit, was planted by the students with native species such as pacific ninebark, salmonberry, red osier dogwood, and willow. Replanting such native species helps in restoring the creek to its former natural state, prevents streambank erosion, and protects the salmon habitat.
