Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Garden Maintenance Crew Leader / Horticulturalist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a small crew, managing daily operations on job sites, and ensuring high-quality garden maintenance. You will utilize your horticultural expertise to provide exceptional garden care while supervising and mentoring a crew member. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a horticulture background and a passion for gardening, with the added responsibility of driving company vehicles and maintaining strong communication with clients and team members.
Key Responsibilities:
- Crew Leadership: Manage and supervise a team of 1 crew member on assigned gardening and landscape maintenance tasks. Provide direction, guidance, and support to ensure efficiency and quality of work. - Garden Maintenance: Perform and oversee general garden maintenance activities including weeding, perennial care, bed edging, pest ID/management, and shrub trimming. Ensure all tasks are completed to the highest standards
- Plant Knowledge: Apply horticultural knowledge to properly identify and care for plants, trees, and shrubs. Advise on plant selection and care techniques for optimal growth and health.
- Mowing and Trimming: Operate mowers, trimmers, and other landscaping equipment for general maintenance of lawns and garden areas. (Experience with this equipment is an asset, but not required.) - Vehicle and Equipment Management: Drive a company truck and trailer to transport tools, equipment, and materials to job sites. Ensure the vehicle and equipment are properly maintained and ready for use. - Client Communication: Represent the company professionally when interacting with clients. Address client concerns and ensure customer satisfaction with completed work.
- Health & Safety: Maintain a safe working environment by following all safety protocols and ensuring team members adhere to safety guidelines. - Record Keeping: Keep accurate records of work completed, materials used, and any issues that arise during maintenance activities. Report regularly to supervisors.
Qualifications:
- Completion of at least one year of a horticulture degree or diploma program (or equivalent gardening education/experience).
- Strong knowledge of plant care, garden maintenance, and basic horticultural practices.
- Proven experience in gardening, landscape maintenance, or horticulture-related work is preferred.
- Ability to operate landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and other hand tools (experience is an asset).
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a small team.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently and efficiently.
- Strong communication skills, both with clients and team members.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; ability to drive a truck and trailer safely to job sites.
- Ability to lift heavy objects, work in various weather conditions, and perform physically demanding tasks.
