T2202 - Tuition and Enrolment Certificate

Effective as of the 2019 tax year, all post-secondary institutions are required to provide the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) with each student's Social Insurance Number (SIN) on the Tuition and Enrolment Certificate (T2202). A T2202 form is produced for each student at KPU who is registered in eligible credit courses. Further information regarding the eligibility of amounts can be found at the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) site. Information about the Authorized Federal use of the SIN can be found at the Government of Canada site here.

What is a T2202?

The Tuition and Enrolment Certificate (T2202) is an official tax receipt. It is issued to all students who have incurred tuition and fees for qualifying courses that are eligible to claim on the income tax return. For more information please see the Students and Income Tax document provided by the CRA.

Frequently asked questions

T2202 Corrections

I have an incorrect address or a new SIN, do I need my T2202 updated?

No, an amended T2202 is not required. T2202 forms will be submitted to Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) with the information that is on your record at the time of preparation of the forms. As the CRA does not require SIN and address changes to be amended on tax forms after submission, KPU will not amend and refile your current and/or prior year's T2202 forms for address and SIN updates.

The amount or months on my T2202 are incorrect, can I get an updated T2202?

If you believe your claimable amounts or your months are not correct, then please reach out to registration@kpu.ca and provide them with your student ID to verify your details.

International students and T2202

I am an International student, am I required to provide a SIN? Do I need a T2202?

If you have earned income in Canada and are filing a Canadian tax return, you are required to provide KPU your SIN. For the 2019 tax year onwards, KPU is required to provide the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) with each student's SIN on the T2202. The T2202 tax receipt will allow you to use tuition paid as a tax deduction on your income tax return. Please consult the Government of Canada tax obligations site 'International students studying in Canada' for more information.

COOP courses and T2202

What if I am a COOP student and taking no other classes?

As per CRA, a student exclusively enrolled in a co-op term, without taking any other classes, is neither classified as a full-time nor part-time student. Therefore, KPU must report "0" months on the T2202 tax form for such students.

Understanding tax deductions

What if I have questions about my income tax return or understanding tax deductions?

KPU staff are not able to provide income tax advice. For questions regarding the use of the Tuition and Enrolment Certificate (T2202) form or information about filing your income tax return, please visit the Canada Revenue Agency site.

Social Insurance Number (SIN) Submission

How and where do I submit/update my SIN?

First-time SIN submissions must be done through myKPU, then select Update Personal information > Submit SIN.

If your SIN on file is incorrect, please contact Student Enrolment Services for assistance with updating your records. Upload here the Student Information Change form along with your Social Insurance Number (SIN) card or letter, AND government-issued photo ID (e.g. driver’s license, passport).

Information about the Social Insurance Number can be found on the Government of Canada website.
