Job Title: Groundskeeper

Job Level: Temporary – Staff (100% full-time)

Job Description: Under the general direction of the Grounds Supervisor, the Groundskeeper performs services and maintenance of the campus grounds for the university. The Groundskeeper’s key responsibilities include:

 

Campus Grounds & Greenspace Maintenance

• Maintains existing grounds and landscaping on all campus locations by operating hand and powered maintenance equipment which includes by priority, watering, weeding, mowing, edging, mulching, shearing, pruning, spraying, and fertilizing activities

• Maintains general appearance, cleanliness, and safety of campus grounds, parking lots, exterior entrances, patios, and walkways

• Performs minor repairs to hardscape

 

Parking Lot Maintenance

• Re-grades gravel parking lots with a tractor on a quarterly basis

• Maintains, installs, removes, and re-locates sign posts and signs as required

• Responsible for keeping catch basins and parking drains clear from obstruction to prevent blockages and potential flooding

• Performs daily safety checks

 

Equipment & Repairs

• Operates a variety of heavy duty equipment for grounds maintenance, renovations, and snow removal

• Performs minor servicing on fleet vehicles

• Troubleshoots and diagnoses grounds equipment operations; performs repairs as able

 

Logistics

• Recommends suitable plant material for landscaping renovation projects and development of new landscape areas in collaboration with the Grounds Supervisor

Purchases and transports fuel, raw materials, and equipment between campuses

• Reviews and completes work orders

• Monitors and carries out established preventative maintenance procedures on a yearly cycle

 

Emergency Response

• Assists in performing building evacuation procedures and subject to emergency call-out work

• Performs snow removal services as required

 

Qualifications: Certificate in Landscape Horticulture from a recognized institution. Two (2) years related experience in grounds and turf maintenance, grounds keeping, and/or green industry (preferably at a large institution). A valid drivers’ license is required and a valid pesticide applicator’s license is preferred. First Aid training desirable. Experience in coordinating and monitoring of contracted landscaping services is desirable.
