University Qualifying Studies
Description
University Qualifying Studies provides an opportunity for study for students who want to pursue upgrading or preparatory studies prior to beginning their undergraduate or vocational program.
Qualifying Studies courses are offered either in a semester-based format (for example, ENGQ 1091 and 1099, MATQ 1099, or BIOQ 1099), or in continuous-intake format (for example, ENGQ 0065, MATQ 1089).
Continuous-intake format classes accept new students every month, and students continue with their course or courses until they are completed. Continuous-intake courses are designed for those students who may require more time to upgrade their skills than would be available in a semester-based course.
Continuous-intake courses are grouped into levels, as follows:
-
Fundamental Level
Students will benefit from the Fundamental Level if they have difficulty with basic reading, writing, and math. Completion of this level prepares students for some trades programs, and courses at the Intermediate Level. -
Intermediate Level
Completion of courses at this level prepares students for courses at the Advanced Level, for direct entry into many trades and vocational programs, and for the GED. -
Advanced Level
Completion of courses at the Advanced Level prepares students for courses at the Provincial Level. Advanced Level courses (such as MATQ 1094 and MATQ 1099) may also be used as prerequisites for other courses at KPU. Completion of Advanced English courses will normally allow a student to succeed in the LPI test. Advanced Level math is a requirement of the Adult Graduation Diploma (the Adult Dogwood). -
Provincial Level
Courses at the Provincial Level include ENGQ 1091, ENGQ 1092, and BIOQ 1099. These courses are normally only available in semester-based format.
To prepare for undergraduate or vocational program admission, students should review the program admission requirements of their intended program, and use the information below to plan their courses.
Program Admission Requirements
General university admission requirements apply to this program including the university preparatory-level English Proficiency Requirement.
Access to University Qualifying Studies depends on individual course prerequisites; students may qualify depending on previous academic experience and/or assessment.
All applicants are recommended to take assessments in English and/or math to ensure appropriate placement in the program. Assessments are booked through Student Enrolment Services (kpu.ca/ses).
Program Requirements
Requirements are dependent on the program of study the student is pursuing. For information about planning courses to meet admission requirements or course prerequisites, see Adult Basic Education and Qualifying Studies Courses.
