Interdisciplinary Design Studies
IDDS 1100 cr-3
Applied Design I
Students will explore design-related principles and processes and
apply knowledge and skills to the resolution of design problems
and the effective communication of concepts and solutions.
Students will focus on two-dimensional general design projects and
discipline specific applications that will include the following:
research methods, design processes, elements and principles of
design, conceptualization and visualization, creative problem-
solving, materials and media.
IDDS 1110 cr-3
Drawing for Applied Design I
Students will focus on drawing as a foundation for applied design.
Students will learn the tools, elements, and vocabulary of drawing.
They will explore mark making, contour, gesture, line, tone and
volume to understand and communicate ideas in visual form.
Students will apply what they learn to project work that relates to a
range of design disciplines.
IDDS 1121 cr-3
Interdisciplinary Studies
Students will examine design-related issues, theories and practices
as a basis for expanding their knowledge of the field of design, and
for assessing advanced studies and career options. Seminar
discussions and projects will also promote communication,
research, team-building, and critical-thinking skills.
IDDS 1122 cr-3
Interdisciplinary Design History I
Students will examine the development of design ideas as they
relate to various design disciplines in the context of Western
societies and other cultures. Through design and research projects,
students will enhance their understanding of the historical, cultural,
and social contexts in which design was created and shaped from
the ancient world into the 19th century.
IDDS 1131 cr-3
Colour Theory I
Students learn basic colour theories and their application within
the design process. Students will explore the physical
characteristics, psychological effects, and cultural implications of
the use of colour through research projects and studio exercises
involving the use of various mediums and techniques.
IDDS 1150 cr-3
Drafting for Applied Design
Students learn drafting methods and conventions using manual
and free hand techniques that are appropriate for a variety of
design disciplines. Students will design and draw objects and spaces
in two- and three-dimensions, and build three-dimensional models.
IDDS 1185 cr-3
Typography
Students will learn the basic concepts and techniques of
typography and how to identify, classify, and create letter forms.
They will develop skills in critical thinking and project
management through research and studio projects. Students will
explore the historical developments and theories that led to
contemporary typographic form and usage.
IDDS 1200 cr-3
Applied Design II
Students will combine knowledge and skills developed in IDDS
1100 with a comprehensive exploration of principles and processes
relating to three-dimensional design. Through individual and team-
based activities, students will integrate creative and technical
methodologies including innovative use of media and materials,
and the development of communication, presentation and team-
working capabilities in assignments that will include both general
design and discipline-specific applications.
Students will explore the possibilities of drawing and the ways in
which it relates to applied design. Students will expand their
knowledge of the tools, elements, and vocabulary of drawing as
well as colour media. They will explore perspective, line, tone and
gesture will increase the ability to understand and communicate
design ideas and solutions.
Prerequisites: IDDS 1110 or FINA 1100 or equivalent.
IDDS 1222 cr-3
Interdisciplinary Design History II
This course explores the evolution of design and the development
of contemporary design concepts and practices. Studio and
research-based projects will provide the basis for an in-depth
examination of the social contexts and historical significance of
major design-related events, ideas, styles, and movements from the
Industrial Revolution to present day.
IDDS 1250 cr-3
Computer Assisted Drafting for Applied Design
Students will learn to produce drawings using computer assisted
drafting software (with an emphasis on AutoCAD) relating to a
variety of design disciplines. They will create two- and three-
dimensional drawings that will communicate design ideas visually
through a variety of design projects. Students will propose and
negotiate their own final project.
Students will learn how to apply layout grids and other visual
devices related to typographic design to extend their ability to
create effective visual communications. They will study
typographical hierarchies, compositional elements, spatial
organization, and 20th Century developments that have influenced
contemporary typography
Students will explore principles and methods related to design
theory and pedagogy. They will assess basic models relating to
design processes and the setting of contexts and objectives for
project development, lesson planning. Students will learn
information and perspectives that will aid in counseling students at
their respective institution with regards to post-secondary
education and career planning.
Note: This course is intended to help secondary and post-
secondary educators broaden their knowledge of issues and
methods specific to the study and teaching of design.
Prerequisites: Subject to approval by department Coordinator
