Bachelor of Science in Integrated Pest Management (under review)
DESCRIPTION
This program is currently undergoing a significant revision. Key program features and career opportunities are unchanged (see below). changes to the entrance requirements and curriculum are anticipated.
The proposed revisions to the program include:
- a credential name change to Bachelor of Horticulture Science
- a greater transfer credit for diploma graduates
- two areas of study: plant health (IPM) and green space management
Some of the key features of the degree include:
- Development of knowledge, core competencies, and skills characteristic of a Bachelor of Horticulture Science program with specialized emphasis in plant health and green space management;
- Preparation for business careers by incorporating essential employability skills in all courses;
- Development of analytical skills to promote critical thinking and innovation in the discovery of new approaches to solve management problems;
- Development of communication skills, which will include oral presentations to a variety of audiences, a wide range of written papers and reports, and a research project.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates will be prepared for a wide range of careers wherever horticulture is practiced. In addition to careers in production horticulture (greenhouse and nursery), landscape horticulture (urban, residential, and commercial landscapes) and turf management (golf courses and athletic fields), opportunities exist at all points in the broader horticulture industry.
This Bachelor's Degree prepares graduates for:
- Careers with government agencies specializing in plant inspections at the federal level to designing non-pesticide alternatives at the municipal parks board level;
- Careers within the horticulture industry sector as integrated pest management specialists in greenhouses, nurseries, field production of vegetables and fruits, for landscape maintenance firms, arboriculture companies, and golf courses;
- Careers as technical advisors in companies;
- Self employment as consultants preparing pest management plans and conducting research trials for government, industry and private clients. Graduates will be qualified to teach courses in horticulture at the citation, certificate and diploma levels.
