CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Plumbers have the expertise (knowledge and skills) to install, repair and maintain a variety of piping systems (copper, plastic, etc.), plumbing fixtures that associate with water distribution and waste water disposal. Job tasks will require the knowledge of codes and regulations. Plumbers are employed in many areas of the community – educational and health care facilities, residential and commercial construction businesses, maintenance departments, plumbing contractors and manufacturing plants.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

APPRENTICESHIP

The plumbing apprenticeship requires apprentices to complete four levels of technical training and 5620 hours of work-based training. Kwantlen Polytechnic offers apprenticeship levels 1 and 2. Technical training content for level 1 consists of safety, tool usage, pipes, valves, fitting, rigging, cutting, soldering, brazing, and blueprint reading.

Technical training content for level 2 consists of hot water heating systems, pipe drawings & specifications, pipe rough-in & finishing, drainage & venting systems, compressed air & medical gas and leveling instruments.

FOUNDATIONS

The Plumbing Foundation program in British Columbia is 21 weeks. Students will develop the necessary habits concerning safety and the proper use of time, tools, materials, and the work skills required to be a competent trade's person in today's workforce. Students that successfully complete the Foundation program and have attained the required number of on-the-job training hours (1405), may apply to the Industry Training Authority (ITA) for their apprentice status.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Students must meet either the regular student admission category or the mature student admission category in addition to the following:

Due to the nature of this program, students should have satisfactory physical health.

CONTENT

This program is offered Monday to Friday on a fixed intake basis. The content has been organized into modules to ensure maximum flexibility for individualized training.

Mathematics

Note: Students must achieve 70% (B-) or better in all practical exams and tests to graduate from this program.

Special Equipment
Students will require appropriate steel-toed safety shoes or boots.

Students may also be required to supply their own general hand tools complete with lockable toolbox; the list is available on the web site and will be provided to students by the instructor on the first day of class.

GRADUATION
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be awarded a Statement of Completion.
