Supervisory Skills for Horticulture Technicians & FloristsStudents will study basic supervisory skills for small work-groups (up to 20 co-workers) in horticultural businesses. They will learn interpersonal communication techniques to help resolve work-group issues and problems. Students will also learn motivation concepts, principles of working in culturally diverse work environments and how to conduct effective group meetings.

Supervisory SkillsThis course is designed for students in programs other than business. Business 1205 introduces students to the basic supervisory concepts and functions. It focuses on first line supervision and covers areas such as contemporary approaches to supervision, participative leadership and teams, total quality management (TWM), and the functions of management as applied at the supervisory level. This course will be of interest to working supervisors as well as students in various programs who are preparing themselves for a future supervisory position.

Business Management in HorticultureStudents in Horticulture will lean the basic concepts of business management needed to be successful in the industry, including: budgeting, cash flow management, working with financial statements, basic banking procedures and dealing with financial institutions. The students also lean basic record keeping and inventory management. Key government regulation affecting horticulture businesses and management of risk in British Columbia will also be covered.

Essentials of ManagementThis course introduces students to the principles of management. The course reviews the major managerial functions such as planning, organizing, leading, and controlling and examines the role of the manager as a decision maker responsible for attainment of the strategic goals and objectives of the organization. Students will learn current concepts, theories, techniques, and models including total quality management (TQM), the contingency approach, and ethical practices. They will have the opportunity to improve their analytical and practical skills through case analysis and presentation.

Organizational Behaviour IThis course introduces students to the fundamentals of organizational behaviour and deals in depth with the following areas: individual motivation, leadership, interpersonal relations, groups, and organizational structure. Course emphasis is placed on students developing and understanding of organizational behaviour concepts and models and their relevance in the work place. The concepts of total quality management (TQM) and the contingency approach, and ethical practices are integrated into the course.

Human Relations in OrganizationsThe course emphasizes concepts and applications of human behaviour in organizations. It covers in depth the phenomena of communications, leadership, decision-making, conflict, and change at the individual, group, and organizational levels. Activities include assessment of students' human relations strengths and weaknesses. The course is largely directed to current events, particularly in B.C.

Development of Business PlansThis offering is designed for both mature business students and business practitioners having an interest in small and medium enterprise development. Participants should enter the course with advance knowledge and/or experience in Canadian business fundamentals, marketing concepts, and accounting principles. Topics range from strategic planning to survival and growth techniques, while the main focus is on the step-by-step approach to developing an effective business plan. A combination of lectures, readings, and case discussions are used in tandem with the week-by-week formulation of individual plans.

Business SimulationStudents will analyse business situations involving decision-making in various management aspects such as employee motivation, employee resistance to change, human resources, leadership, managerial controls and conflict, marketing or finance. The course is developed around a computerized business simulation and allows students to use knowledge accumulated in many business courses. The course focuses on building skills in four main areas: decision-making, report writing, individual and group presentations, and group discussions.

International TradeThis course is designed to provide students with a good grasp of the various aspects of international trade from a Canadian perspective. The emphasis is to learn the principles and practice of export/import marketing. Among the topics covered are the Canadian trade position and the institutional frameworks and procedures within which international trade functions; elements and analysis of international information, alternative exporting and importing methods; effective advertising and promotion overseas; packaging, shipping, documentation, and marine insurance; export pricing; quotations, and credit appraisal; financing and management of foreign exchange risk; government rules, policies, and assistance programs affecting international trade, and discussion of contemporary international trade issues.
