Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting

Description
The Bachelor of Business Administration Program provides full-time and part-time intensive study for students wishing to earn a business degree from Kwantlen University College.
This degree is an appropriate goal for students who want to study beyond a diploma and their initial two-year equivalent post secondary education. Students enter the program after successfully completing an accounting diploma from a recognized college, institute or university with a minimum of 60 credits and a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher. This program then offers the third and fourth years of the degree program.
The BBA degree program provides advanced accounting, business and leadership training and is the next step for many students in their life-long learning process. It integrates skills and concepts learned in different functional areas of business.
Students acquire:
- Technical business skills through their subject specific studies;
- General success skills through their employability skills studies; and
- Better understanding of human society and how to contribute to it through liberal education studies.
- Degree classes are scheduled for days, evenings and weekends to allow students to either further their education while maintaining current employment or as a full-time student.
Some unique features of this program are:
- Graduates who have applied and practiced employability skills. Examples of how this will be achieved include practicums, learning partnerships with business, applied projects and assignments and ongoing work experience;
- Prior learning assessment allowing individuals with appropriate work experience to further their education in their own community. These will mainly be mid-career individuals looking to enhance professional qualifications;
- Full block transfer of credits from recognized college and university programs;
- Student exit/re-entry flexibility. A student can complete the program at their own pace.
- Professional development for individuals seeking higher level training.
Options: Regular and Co-op Mode
Students may graduate from either the regular Bachelor of Business Administration degree mode or the optional Co-operative Education mode. Students applying for Co-op must complete all prescribed courses with a cumulative GPA of a least 3.0.

Career Opportunities
In Canada, a degree is now a mandatory prerequisite to the awarding of an accounting designation. Similar requirements are being implemented in other countries that have professional governing bodies.
In the past few years BC has experienced an employment growth rate of over 40% for auditors, accountants and investment professionals. By 2005 industry analysts project in excess of 9500 job opportunities in the accounting and finance areas. Similar trends are evident throughout Canada and the United States.
Admission Requirements
Students enter the program in the third year, upon completion of two years of study. The admission requirements are met by one of the following:
- Completed an accounting diploma from a recognized college, institute or university, with a minimum of 60 credits and cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, or;
- Awarded a professional designation from the CGA, CMA or CA. Applicants in this category will qualify for advanced standing in the degree program through a combination of transfer credit and Prior Learning Assessment. Please contact the Chair of Accounting Programs for more information, or;
- Completed some, or all, of the education requirements of the CGA, CMA or CA leading to a professional accounting designation. Applicants in this latter category may qualify for advance standing in the degree program through a combination of transfer credit and Prior Learning Assessment. You may be required to first complete a Kwantlen Accounting Diploma depending on the level of completion of your professional studies. The degree program will require a minimum of 120 credit hours of post-secondary courses. This includes the initial two years of post-secondary education equal to 60 credit hours.
The courses in 3rd and 4th year are rigorous and demanding. Prior to registering, you should carefully consider the time requirements of part-time versus full-time study based on your individual work and personal situation.
Years 1 and 2
Successful completion of a two year Accounting Diploma. this requirement must be satisfied prior to your acceptance to the BBA program. Students may complete this at Kwantlen or another recognized post-secondary institution.
Years 3 and 4
You are able to exit and enter the final two years of the program as yours needs change.

Career Opportunities
The degree design is based on extensive consultations with business leaders. They told us there is a requirement for managers and entrepreneurs who can take Business leadership roles or start their own businesses.
Graduates will be engaged in enterprise development, management and leadership in small and medium sized businesses. Based on Labour Market Trends in British Columbia (1994) which identify a shift of employment from the goods manufacturing section to the services sector, the program will focus more on services than manufacturing.
Admission Requirements
Students enter the program in the third year, upon completion of two years of study. The admission requirements are met by one of the following:
- Completion of a business-related diploma from a recognized college or university, with a minimum of 60 credits, a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, and a C+ or higher in accounting and statistics; or,
- Completion of 60 university transferable credits from any recognized college, including the six bridging courses, or transferable equivalents, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 and with a C+ in Accounting and Statistics. Applicants, without 60 credits of formal education, but with significant experience or non-formal learning, may be able to obtain academic credits through Prior Learning Assessment. This assessment should be initiated at least six months in advance; or,
- Students with either a business diploma or 60 university transferable credits, including the six bridging courses, but who do not meet the GPA requirements or the C+ in Statistics and Accounting, may apply as a special entrant. These applicants must submit two business and/or personal references and resume. A short presentation may be required.

The degree program will require 120 credit hours of post-secondary courses. This includes the initial two years of post-secondary education equal to 60 credit hours.
Year 1 and 2
Successful completion of two years' post-secondary studies.
1 . A business-related diploma such as Kwantlen's Accounting Diploma, Business Administration Diploma, Business Management Diploma, Commerce Diploma, Computer Information Systems Diploma, General Business Studies Diploma or, Marketing Management Diploma.
2 . A Non-Business Diploma, Associate Degrees or equivalents including the following bridging courses.
Bridging Program Courses
Students who do not have a two-year business related diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution are required to complete six "bridging" courses. Students do not have to repeat any courses they have already taken, including equivalent courses from other institutions. All of these courses are widely offered at Kwantlen.

Bachelor of Business Administration - Open University (OU)
Transfer program to Open University
Description
Kwantlen business diploma graduates have the option of pursuing the Open University's Bachelor of Business Administration. Kwantlen students who complete a business diploma in Accounting, Business Administration, Business Management, Commerce, General Business Studies, or Marketing Management are eligible for a block transfer of up to 60 credits toward the OU degree. Students who complete a business diploma in Computer Information Systems are eligible for a block transfer of up to 45 credits.

To be eligible for the full block transfer of 60 credits toward the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree Program, graduates must meet the following requirements:
- an appropriate Kwantlen University College Business diploma
- a minimum GPA of 2.67 (70%)
- a minimum grade of 60% for courses in introductory economics and statistics
- completion of specific course requirements within the diploma program
- completion of the diploma program within the last seven years.
