Drawing I

This course will introduce students to the basic tools and elements of drawing, expand their visual vocabulary, and aid them in the interpretation, organization, and communication of ideas visually.

Illustration I

This course introduces the students to the principles and techniques of commercial illustration. It includes the analysis of perspective, line, tone, wash, colour theory, anatomy (life and fashion proportions), texture and composition. Emphasis is placed on the mastery of basic techniques and the use of a variety of mediums, supports, and equipment.

Visual Synthesis I

This course is an exploration of design fundamentals and design processes as they apply to graphic and visual design. Students will broaden their capacity to respond to design-related problems through a comprehensive investigation of conceptual, technical, historical, and theoretical issues. Course projects will introduce the student to the full range of creative and practical challenges associated with design work including basic methodology, research, visualization and presentation skills, conceptualization, and tools, materials, and media.

History of Graphic Design

A survey of the origins and major developments in communication and visual design. Concepts, techniques, and styles in graphic design will be explored and placed in historical context, socially, politically, and economically. Emphasis will be given to the evolution of the Western alphabet, early printing, the emergence of the graphic designer of the 19th and 20th century and present day Canada.

Typographical Design I

This course challenges students to carry experience gained in IDDS 1185 & IDDS 1285 into a more specific graphic design context. Both the theory and design potential of typography will be examined in depth and applied within a series of projects focusing on effective visual communications.

Production Art I

This course will introduce students to basic procedures of pre-press processes for printing production. Students will use fundamental paste-up, camera and negative assembly processes. Students will also be introduced to basic electronic pre-press procedures using computer software.

Technology of Graphics

An introduction to the technical procedures used in the development of graphic design. Students will focus on type, copyfitting, reproduction techniques and processes, printing, paper, and binding.

Sequential Imaging I

In this course, the student applies basic elements, principles and processes within a variety of audio visual media applications.

Drawing II

Using various drawing mediums separately or in combination, the students will explore further the materials and tools of drawing. Students will be encouraged to seek new ways of seeing and expressing visual ideas. Colour will be introduced and an increasing emphasis will be placed on composition

Illustration II

This is an advanced course on the principles and techniques of commercial illustration. It includes the analysis of advanced perspective, line, tone, wash, colour, composition, texture, layout and anatomy. Emphasis is placed on technical proficiency, deadlines and creative response.

Visual Synthesis II

Students will study further the principles, techniques, and procedures of applied design. Students will be introduced to the process of lateral thinking and the visualization of problems and solutions. Emphasis will be placed on effective research, imagination, originality, and the use of appropriate mediums, including electronic image design.

Typographical Design II

This course brings together theories and technology related typographic design. Emphasis will be on development of effective and creative design solutions using critical analyses, conceptualization, problem-solving and technical skills.

Production Art II

In this course students will apply basic pre-press skills to advanced traditional production art processes. Students will expand their skills in electronic pre-press production by using computer software applications to design and prepare production art.

Sequential Imaging II

The student further extends methods learned in GRVD 1152 in producing a complex audio visual special effects sequence.

Business Procedures for Graphic Design

Students will develop a working knowledge of basic business procedures in graphic design studios. The course provides information for graphic designers seeking employment or for those who may have aspirations to freelance. Topics include marketing procedures, management skills, pricing guidelines, record keeping, and copyright information.

Drawing & Painting I

The course will introduce the students to the basic tools, supports, and elements of painting. Students will continue to expand their visual vocabulary through paint, and encourage further the development of drawing skills.

Illustration III

Students will learn to convey messages, events, ideas and values in a visual form using a variety of illustration techniques. Creative ideas will be developed from concept through final working drawings for reproduction, with emphasis on craftsmanship and deadlines.

Visual Synthesis III

Students will study advanced application of the principles, techniques, and procedures of applied design. Included is an introduction to specific design systems such as grids. Emphasis will be placed on individual solutions to visual problems and sound analysis of mediums such as electronic image design.

Production Art III

Students will work extensively with various computer software applications to generate electronic pre-press images of their own design. Students will advance their skill and understanding of the digital pre-press environment by producing multicoloured projects for laser and high-resolution output.

Sequential Imaging III

Building on experiences gained in GRVD 1152 and 1252. The student works with traditional and computer generated imagery in developing animated sequences.

Illustration IV

This course will provide the students with the opportunity to expand their personal illustrative techniques and media skills developed at previous levels. Assignments will be directed toward conceptual solutions in both advertising and editorial illustration.

Visual Synthesis IV

Students will apply learned skills in lateral thinking and problem-solving to advanced projects in poster design, annual report design, publication design, and electronic image design. Great care will be given to creating stimulating projects suitable for a professional portfolio. Emphasis will be placed in individual alternate solutions to a given problem while considering technical criteria, budgets, and deadlines.

Production Art IV

In this course students will utilize advanced technologies to produce a portfolio of electronic pre-press production art. Students will use various software applications to produce functional and efficient electronic production art files that conform to industry standards.

Sequential Imaging IV

In this course the student will apply skills & knowledge gained in previous courses to produce a multi media portfolio.
