Gerontology In Nursing PNUR 9031*

 

Course Description

This online course will enhance the knowledge of both Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who work with our older populations. Learners will learn to approach their nursing practice specific to older people, with attention to physical and psychological needs, spiritual beliefs, culture, family and friends. Removing preconceived ideas, and debunking common myths, the learning will emphasis person-centered care that is as individual as the persons they care for.  This Gerontology in Nursing course incorporates Geriatrics, (study of health and disease in later life) and focuses on the holistic study of aging and maturation throughout the adult life span. The goal for learners is to provide health care to older people that improves longevity and quality of life. Content will include assessment of older persons, common disease conditions, co-morbidity, and physiological foundations and challenges of aging, such as: cognitive impairment, pain, pharmacology, nutrition, skin, independence and fall risks, communication and caring, sleep patterns, elder abuse and end of life care.

Course Format

This is a fully on-line self paced course.  This course is approximately 100-150 hours of self-guided online learning and learners must complete the course by the deadline, extensions are not possible.  Learners should be prepared to spend anywhere from 10-12 hours per week.

Course Cost

$500.00 CAD, plus GST  (Please note: All Faculty of Health, Professional Studies course fees are non-refundable/non-transferrable.) Note: Summer 2024 fees will be increasing to $550 CAD, plus GST.

Course Grade

Successful grade for this course is Mastery

Learners who are not successful in PNUR 9031, Gerontology in Nursing may attempt the course for a second time. Learners requesting a second attempt are required to seek permission from our office, in writing. Learners are advised to contact their Canadian Nursing Regulatory Body for advisement if they are not successful after a second attempt. Third attempts are not permitted. No exceptions. Please note, there is no appeal mechanism within KPU for students receiving non-mastery.

Nursing licensure (pre / post licensure) and foundational nursing knowledge

Relevant Canadian textbooks (of your choice), current within five (5) years.

Please note: Textbooks available from KPU Bookstore or online through major distributors (ie, Amazon, Indigo, etc), or educational libraries.

Learning resources of approximately $100 CAD are an expected requirement when purchasing this course.  Fees are the responsibility of the learner and will be paid to the vendor directly.

It is the belief of FOHPS that these resources are vital and offer exceptional value as the resources are utilized in multiple FOHPS courses.  Students purchase the resource at the beginning of their educational journey for courses and may remain available for two (2) years after initial purchase.  The average cost of the e-resource is about $100 Canadian* dollars which is much less than most hardcover nursing textbooks.
