Course Description

This course is for Registered Nurses (RNs).  Formerly known as PNUR 1112-Medical – Surgical Review course.  This self-paced online course provides the participant with an intensive review of the nursing knowledge required by Registered Nurses to work effectively in the Canadian health care system.  Learners will explore concepts such as pain, fluids and electrolyte balance and brush up their knowledge about diseases and conditions that occur in the various systems of the body such as the neurological, cardiovascular and endocrine systems.  Content may include concepts related to episodic and chronic health challenges, pain transitions, unpredictability, nursing assessment/management of common conditions, oncology reviews, gerontological considerations, clinical decision making, therapeutic modalities, and ethical practice.  If you are preparing for the national nursing exam this course will provide you with the fundamental nursing knowledge required to be successful on the exam. Activities include video clips, case scenarios, puzzles, learning modules and web browsing.  This course is self-paced and learners should be prepared to spend anywhere from 11-12 hours per week of self-guided learning.

Course Format

This is a fully online, self-paced course.  This course is approximately 150 hours of self-guided online learning and learners must complete the course by the deadline, extensions are not possible.  Learners should be prepared to spend anywhere from 11-12 hours per week.  Late registrations are not possible due to course volume.

Course Cost

$550.00 CAD, plus GST    (Please note: All Faculty of Health, Professional Studies course fees are non-refundable/non-transferrable.)  

Course Grade

Successful grade for this course is Mastery

Learners who are not successful in PNUR 9112, Canadian Nursing Theory and Practice - For RNs may attempt the course for a second time. Learners requesting a second attempt are required to seek permission from our office, in writing. Learners are advised to contact their Canadian Nursing Regulatory Body for advisement if they are not successful after a second attempt. Third attempts are not possible. No exceptions. Please note, there is no appeal mechanism within KPU for students receiving non-mastery.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible to register, applicants must have one of the following:

  • Completion of KPU Competency Assessment and Enhancement for Nurses’ (CAEN) assessment; OR
  • A letter or email referral from BCCNM; OR
  • Current nursing licensure

Please note:  Access to a computer and reliable internet is required
