2016 International Focus Week Guest Speakers

The week will open with an opening ceremony that features guest speakers who will be presenting on issues within this year's International Focus Week's theme - Expanding our Global Mindset, with a keynote address by Associate Vice President of KPU International, Stuart Mcllmoyle.

 Below is a synopsis of the guest speakers experience and background.

Deborah B.L. Farias

Deborah BL Farias is a Trade Analyst at the Consulate General of Brazil in Vancouver, and Postdoctoral Working Fellow at UBC's Institute of Asian Research. Her main areas of current interest involve  the International Political Economy of emerging countries (particularly of Brazil, China, and India) and Global Environmental Politics, especially related to renewable energies.

Kareen Wong 

Kareen Wong is the Communications Officer for the British Columbia Council for International Cooperation one of the eight networks which comprise the Inter-Council Network of Regional and Provincial Councils for International Cooperation.

Kareen works engaging and supporting a network of more than 100 civil society groups and individuals working on sustainable development in British Columbia. She has been involved in a series of provincial roundtables on the topic of BC work on the 2030 agenda and is one of 8 Canadian youth who attended the UN Summit on Sustainable Development where the new Sustainable Development Goals were adopted in September, 2015.

Wong is a graduate of Simon Fraser University with a degree in International Development, Economic, and Environmental issues. She also sits on the Board of Directors for the Rivershed Society of BC an organization that runs the Sustainable Living Leadership Program of which Kareen is a 2009 graduate.
