PSYC 4900 Special Topics: Psychology of Emotions

Emotions are everywhere in our lives, yet scientists can’t seem to agree on the best way to define them. We know what it is to experience positive and negative emotions, but the answer to the question of “what is happiness” seems elusive. This course explores classic and current psychological research in the science of emotion and applies it to the debate of defining emotions which has been going on since the times of the ancient Greek philosophers. Topics include defining emotions, communicating and recognizing emotions, development of emotions during infancy and childhood, emotion regulation, the interactions between emotions, personality, and cognition, dysfunctions of emotions, and cultural differences in emotion experiences.
