Introduction to Horseshoeing

This introductory course teaches the student farrier the professional responsibilities of the trade. The student also reviews the fundamentals of horse handling and learns the basics of foot preparation and shoeing.

Prerequisites: Two years' horse handling experience & standard entry requirements.

Introduction to Equine Anatomy

The student farrier learns the conformation of the normal horse in FARR 1112. The anatomy and physiology of the lower limbs are also studied in preparation for basic shoeing exercises.

Prerequisites: Two years' horse handling experience and standard Kwantlen entry requirements.

Introduction to Horse Husbandry and Handling

FARR 1113 teaches the basic elements of horse care and management. Students work at handling and shoeing average and difficult horses in the shop.

Prerequisites: Two years' horse handling experience and standard Kwantlen entry requirements.

Introduction to Gaits and Forge Work

This course teaches the student the analysis of a horse's way of going. Lameness and the various gaits are studied and basic forge work is carried out in the shop.

Introduction to Horse Lameness

In this course, the student learns how to identify lameness and unsoundness in horses, as well as how to communicate effectively with horse owners and veterinarians using professional terminology.

Introduction to Specialized Horses

FARR 1116 teaches identification and general characteristics of common breeds and performance horses. Selection and safe operation of mobile units conclude this basic course.

Introduction to Farriery

Students will learn the professional responsibilities of the trade and the role of the modern farrier within the equine industry. They will learn and practice the essential requirements and habits of a safe work environment for both farrier and horse. Students will develop and execute a personal fitness plan. They will also review the fundamentals of effective horse handling.

Introduction to Equine Anatomy

Students will study the conformation of the horse. They will explore the anatomy of the horse with an emphasis on the limb and hoof in preparation for basic shoeing exercises.

Students will study and practice the basic elements of horse care and management relevant to farriery. Students will manage average and difficult horses in preparation for both trimming and shoeing.

Introduction to Forge Work

Students will learn the basic skills to hot forge mild steel using hand tools. They will learn how to operate natural gas and propane forges and use a variety of anvils common in the farrier industry.

Introduction to Horse Hoof Trimming

The student will learn to assess hoof health and conformation and the trimming needs of average horses to be barefoot. They will practice trimming fore and hind hooves on horses kept barefoot.

The student will learn the techniques to efficiently produce hot forged horse shoes, from mild steel, for the average horse.

Intermediate Horseshoeing

FARR 1211 builds on the foot preparation and shoeing skills acquired in the introductory program. The field of public relations is practiced with professionals.

Intermediate Equine Anatomy

FARR 1212 advances the student's knowledge of horse conformation to an intermediate level. Anatomy and physiology are studied in depth as well for application in shoeing.

Intermediate Study of Specialized Horses

This intermediate course strengthens the farrier student's knowledge of specialized breeds and performance horses. Show regulations of the American Horse Show Association are studied.

Intermediate Farriery

Students will learn the essentials of running a small business servicing the equine industry. They will examine the diversity of equine conformation and how it is connected to leg and hoof problems. They will work with moderately challenging horses and will execute a personal fitness plan.

Physiology of the Equine Leg and Hoof

Student will learn the physiology of individual tissues and the limb, of the horse, as a complete unit. They will study extrinsic and intrinsic factors affecting limb physiology. They will learn trimming and shoeing adaptations to improve hoof function and comfort of the horse.

Equine Hoof Trimming

Students will work with moderately challenging horses, trimming fore and hind hooves for both barefoot and shoeing situations. They will practice trimming tool repair and maintenance.

Intermediate Horseshoe Forging

Students will learn and practice a variety of forging techniques to modify horseshoes to meet the demands of a variety of equine sports. They will also explore horse show rules governing farriery.

Intermediate Horseshoeing

Students will practice efficient fitting and application of horseshoes to fore and hind hooves of horses. Students will shoe client horses with premade and custom forged shoes for a range of equine disciplines, and individual needs of the horse-owner. Students will modify shoes to meet individual needs of various horses.

Advanced Horseshoeing

In FARR 1311, the student farrier advances to the professional level of skill in shoeing. Accompanying this practical study, the student refines knowledge of professional relationships and effective public relations as a business person.
