Nursing Theory I
Students will acquire knowledge and skills, particularly
communication skills, essential for the care of clients. Nursing
skills will be emphasized. Selected nursing skills will be practiced.
Students will become familiar with nursing in Canada, teaching/
learning theory, health promotion, the nursing process and the
Allen Model of Nursing.
Students will examine social epidemiology, health seeking
behaviour and the health care delivery system in Canada. They will
explore public and professional values and expectations related to
health care.
Students will explore nursing in Canada, teaching/learning theory,
health promotion, the nursing process and patient-focused care.
They will acquire knowledge and skills, particularly communication
skills, essential for the care of clients. Students will practice selected
nursing skills
Students will discuss the Erickson model of human development.
They will examine legal, ethical and professional issues. Students
will use the nursing process in planning patient-focused care for
clients with medical-surgical health challenges.
Students will review theory required for the nurse registration
examination with an emphasis on maternal, child and family
nursing. They will also review theory pertaining to mental health
and community nursing, as well as social determinants of health,
professional issues and leadership.
Students integrate knowledge and skills in the care of adult
medical, surgical or extended care clients. Students will gradually
assume more clients and function as beginning nurse practitioners.
