Graduate Nurse Citation

Description

This individualized, self-paced graduate nurse program is designed to meet the needs of nurses who wish to refresh their knowledge and skills in preparation for returning to active nursing practice.

Length of Program: up to 12 months on a part-time basis.

Career Opportunities

This program prepares the graduate to practice nursing by meeting the re-entry course requirement for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of BC (CRNBC). Once registered, nurses are prepared to work in a variety of areas.

Content

The program admits students every semester and is organized into 4 courses.

GNUR 1120 Theory – On-line course

Students will use a computer based program to upgrade their nursing theoretical knowledge for community health nursing and the nursing care of patients requiring hospitalization. This course is offered once per semester (Jan, May and September) and is a pre-requisite to GNUR 1180.

GNUR 1104 Pharmacology – On-line course

Students will use a computer based program to review fundamental principles of pharmacology. They will explore the use of these principles in their occupational roles, including relevant legislation, drug action and interaction, routes of administration, principles of medication administration, and calculation of dosages for drugs used for common health problems in Canada. Students will become familiar with the generic and trade names of drugs prescribed for common health challenges. This course is offered once per semester (Jan, May and September) and is a co-requisite of GNUR 1180.

GNUR 1180 Lab & Workshop Course: Graduate Nurse Re-entry

The student attends a series of labs and workshops. The labs offer students the opportunity to refresh their knowledge and gain new knowledge and psychomotor skills. The workshops focus on topics such as professional issues in nursing; critical thinking; clinical decision making; and the preceptorship. Preparation for the labs is in the form of a self study module and on-line learning. Students will be required to attend labs on site. GNUR 1120 is a pre-requisite to GNUR 1180. GNUR 1104 is a co-requisite of GNUR 1180.

GNUR 1210 Preceptorship

Students will be working with a preceptor in a nursing practice setting. They will develop confidence and competence in their nursing practice in preparation for the role of Registered Nurse. Students will apply knowledge and skills for current nursing practice.

The preceptorship course is 160 practice hours (minimum) and takes place in a nursing practice setting. The student may suggest the setting and every effort will be made to accommodate the student's request.

This self-paced, program is offered on a semester basis. The program includes on-line material for home study with on-line exams, nursing skill laboratory sessions and hospital clinical experience. The content provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe nursing care for adults in the health care setting.

Costs

In addition to tuition fees, students will spend up to approximately $1,000 for textbooks, course materials, uniforms, etc., for the entire program. Students are also responsible for providing their own transportation to the clinical experience.

Graduation

Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded a Citation in Graduate Nurse Re-Entry Program.
