KPU has established designated Refuge Zones, usually located in stairwells, for individuals who may need assistance evacuating a building floor during an emergency.
Designated refuge zones are intended to enhance occupant safety and provide secure areas within a building for individuals who are unable to use stairs during an emergency. These zones offer a place to wait for assistance from emergency personnel. They are clearly marked with signage to indicate your exact location and emergency contact information.
KPU’s buildings meet legislated building code requirements for life safety. Those designated for occupancy are considered compliant due to the presence of the sprinkler systems throughout the buildings. KPU’s designated refuge zones provide an enhanced level of safety and protection for those unable to evacuate safely. We strongly advise all occupants to follow the established emergency protocols and utilize these areas if required during an emergency situation.
To be well-prepared, please review KPU’s Evacuation Emergency Procedure and consider enrolling in the KPU Emergency Procedure course available on Moodle. Familiarity with these procedures and resources will better equip you to respond effectively during an emergency.
